International humanitarian action is increasingly being criticised for systemic power imbalances and its control by the "Global North". Aside from the structural factors, hidden prejudices and worldviews of humanitarian practitioners tend to contribute to racism, exclusion and discriminatory practices.
In order to reflect on your own, often hidden and subconscious prejudices and perceptions and to explore new ways of acting, we cordially invite you to a three-day online training "Anti-Bias and Anti-Discrimination in Humanitarian Action" which will take place on 1, 5 and 7 October 2021 from 9.00 to 13.00 each day. The course is hosted by the Institute for International Law of Peace and Armed Conflict (IFHV) of the Ruhr-University Bochum and is part of a joint project between the IFHV and VENRO.
You will participate in three highly interactive sessions on anti-discrimination, inclusivity and anti-bias, highlighting the intersectionality of different forms of discrimination in humanitarian action. The aim of the course is to sensitise you to issues such as exclusion, discrimination and prejudice and to be able to relate what you learn in your daily work.
The training will be held in English and is directed at staff of NGOs with previous experience in humanitarian action, students and graduates of relevant disciplines as well as newcomers and career changers.
The training will be led by Friederike Bubenzer and Carolin Gomulia. Friederike Bubenzer is a peacebuilding practitioner with over 15 years of experience contributing to social cohesion and reconciliation processes with policy makers and civil society leaders across the African continent. Carolin Gomulia founded The Workroom - A transformation and development agency in 2018 and is a senior consultant at MzN International. She worked for several years at the Institute for Justice and Reconciliation in South Africa where she contributed to and facilitated numerous processes on anti-bias and anti-discrimination.
