Effective complaint handling mechanisms are useful to identify misconduct in organisations at an early stage. They play an important role in the protection of children and vulnerable adults from all forms of harm, including sexual exploitation, abuse and harassment. In this seminar participants get a step-by-step introduction how to develop and implement effective complaint handling mechanisms for cases of sexual exploitation and abuse.
Contents
This interactive workshop will cover the establishment of complaints handling and feedback mechanisms based on international safeguarding standards and donor requirements including managing It will show how to respond to a disclosure. We will also look at case management (role and responsibilities of stakeholders, survivor-centred approaches) and how to work well with partner organisations in identifying risks. Finally, we will look at how to develop a safe organisational culture and how this can be implemented in practice in your own organisation. We will use mixed methodologies to highlight current good practice in the international development and humanitarian sectors supported by peer learning.
Target group
This workshop is aimed at those employees of German INGOs working in the international development and humanitarian sector, who have responsibility for safeguarding and/or complaints handling mechanisms, e.g. safeguarding leads or focal points, programme advisors and managers, HR managers or designated safeguarding officers.
Format
The workshop consists of half-day pre-workshop assignment and 2.5 day face-to-face training days. The sessions will be in English.

Facilitators
Aneeta Williams is a human rights lawyer and an international development and humanitarian practitioner (20 years) based in the UK with a passion to prevent, respond and support access to justice for vulnerable survivors/victims and witnesses of abuse, violence and exploitation. She has extensive international experience working with the UN, INGOs, NGOs and private sector organisations over 20 years including policy development, capacity building and investigations in safeguarding.
Costs
Participation at this workshop is free of charge. Travel and accommodation costs must be organised and paid for by participants themselves. The training is limited in number of participants. Your registration is binding.
The VENRO guidelines for development policy project and programme work
The eight VENRO guidelines describe the common understanding of quality of VENRO's member organisations, which have committed themselves to aligning their project and programme work in the Global South with them. We offer continuous training on individual guidelines for practical implementation. This training relates to Guideline No. 2: Gender equality, sexual orientation and gender identity.
