Remote Participatory Video: Capturing Voices without Filters

Online training, 26 October - 4 November 2021

Designing participatory humanitarian action that works is a challenge. One method on how to do it is by using storytelling and video - even remotely.

The Institute for International Law of Peace and Armed Conflict (IFHV) would like to invite you to an online training „Remote Participatory Video: Capturing Voices without Filters“, taking place on 26, 27, 28 October and 3, 4 November 2021. The training is part of a joint project by the IFHV of Ruhr-University Bochum and VENRO. The seminar can be credited for the "Certificate of Advanced Studies in Locally-Led Humanitarian Action". You can find more information here.

The training will be held in five half-day sessions over the course of two weeks, providing time for participants to work with their protagonists to capture voices directly, co-develop story lines and visualise their findings and material. There is no particular technical knowledge required, though participants will have to have a very stable internet connection so send and receive large files.

We invite programme staff, MEAL experts, researchers, and communication experts alike to participate in the training. Kindly note that based on the course design we encourage participation by teams of two individuals working for the same organisation. You will work in groups of two for shooting and interviewing. You may indicate your team application in the registration.

The training will be held by the experienced trainers Ralf Otto and Simon Koolwijk, who are applying the method in a range of settings, including in crisis contexts and remotely. With their combined experience in international development, facilitation, video making and participatory action, they will provide excellent guidance and learning opportunities throughout the training.

Registration and a detailed agenda can be found on the course page here. Participation is free of charge. Given that the number of participants is limited, we kindly ask you to briefly answer a motivational question upon registration.
