INTERACTIVE: Basic Knowledge on Impact Orientation

Impact orientation in development cooperation projects ensures that resources are used efficiently, interventions achieve their intended objectives, and have a positive influence on the living conditions of local communities. Observing impacts focuses on identifying, describing, and measuring changes brought about by the outcomes of development cooperation interventions. On the project level, impact orientation means considering the effects of initiatives from the outset, in collaboration with partners and target groups. On the organizational level, it involves fostering learning through monitoring and evaluation processes. This introductory video provides an introduction to integrating impact-oriented approaches into development project and program work.

Assignments

The following assignments will help you to implement the learning from the video:

Assignment 1:

  • Please take a look at the intervention strategy of your project. Do the outputs, outcome and impact correspond to the defined different spheres of control, responsibility and interest? If not, how should they be?

Assignment 2:

  • Can you describe exactly what beneficiaries do differently when they use the services/outputs provided by your project? Can you measure this progress?
  • When people use the products and services provided by the project, how will you know if the expected change (outcome) is occurring?
