Exchange Workshop on the Role of Local Actors in Anticipatory Humanitarian Action

Institute for International Law of Peace and Armed Conflict

29 and 31 August (online) from 10:00 am to 3:00 pm and on 6 September (in Bochum, optional) from 9:00 am to 5:00 pm CEST.

The approach of Anticipatory Humanitarian Action (AHA) has been championed mainly by international actors, for example from the Red Cross / Red Crescent Movement or the UN cosmos. Meanwhile, the role and contributions of local actors, such as local NGOs or CSOs, remain less clear in many contexts. This exchange workshop offers an open platform for humanitarian NGOs to reflect on the status-quo, best practices and challenges regarding engagement and leadership of local actors in anticipatory humanitarian action.

Contents

You will learn:

  • how to identify common challenges and goals with regard to engagement and leadership of local actors in AA
  • how to present and exchange the status quo and concrete project examples from their own organizations
  • about best practices concerning the role and contributions of local actors to AA
  • how to critically reflect your role in enabling and maximizing engagement and leadership of local actors in your own projects

Target Group

Target group are AHA practitioners from national or local NGOs and partner organizations as well as staff of German NGOs. We invite German NGO colleagues to share relevant information on this event with their local and national partners. The sessions will be held in English.

Facilitators

The workshop will be led by facilitators from Welthungerhilfe that combine various backgrounds of expertise and experience in AHA. Especially with its Welthungerhilfe Anticipatory Humanitarian Action Facility (WAHAFA), Welthungerhilfe has not only been involved in Anticipatory Humanitarian Action for several years, but successfully rolled out an approach that enables local NGOs to engage in AHA and become active drivers of the humanitarian paradigm shift towards Anticipation.

Format

The workshop consists of two online sessions (29 and 31 August) that are open to staff from local and national NGOs as well as German NGOs. It closes on an in-person session in Bochum (6 September) that specifically addresses staff of German NGOs and constitutes an (optional) in-depth reflection as well as the development of an action plan to strengthen involvement and leadership of local actors in anticipatory action. Online workshop participants do not necessarily have to join the in-person workshop and we kindly ask you to indicate in the registration form which session(s) you would like to attend.

Costs

The seminar is free of charge. Your registration is binding.
