Climate finance for small scale farmers

VENRO

What instruments to support smallholders in adapting to and mitigating effects of climate change?

Small scale farmers account for approximately 80 percent of food production in developing countries. They thus contribute considerably to reducing hunger and poverty. In agriculture, they are the ones most affected by climate-related weather events such as droughts or heavy rains. However, less than two percent of public climate finance is spent on supporting smallholders to adapt to or mitigate climate change.

In the online event, we will, therefore, look into policy recommendations favouring instruments such as blended finance, insurances or subsidized loans to close this significant gap to enhancing smallholders capacities to address adaption and mitigation challenges. We will then, from a civil society perspective, critically reflect these instruments, with regard to creating resilient and just food systems. Specifically, we will look into gender-sensitive and participatory approaches to increase income and reach food security.
