The use of geodata in humanitarian action holds great potential, for example in the context of thorough risk analysis. Against this background, the analysis of geodata has also become a core component of anticipatory humanitarian approaches, such as Forecast-based Financing (FbF), which seek to reduce the negative impacts of disasters by providing assistance to populations before predicted crises.

The Institute for International Law of Peace and Armed Conflict (IFHV) therefore invites you to the online seminar “The Use of Geoinformation in (Anticipatory) Humanitarian Action”. The training discusses the most important applications of geospatial data in humanitarian action and will take place from 17 to 28 January 2022 on Mondays, Wednesdays, and Fridays from 9 am to 1 pm each day (17, 19, 21, 24, 26 and 28 January 2022). It is part of a joint project of VENRO and the IFHV supported by the German Federal Foreign Office. Participants will get an overview of existing data sources, including user-generated data such as OpenStreetMap. They will learn how to use this data systematically, with a particular focus on the use of geospatial data in the context of risk analysis in order to provide needs-based and anticipatory humanitarian assistance. Within this module, participants will also learn the basics of using the open-source software QGIS.

The training is facilitated jointly by the German Red Cross and the Heidelberg Institute for Geoinformation Technology. Since 2017, both institutions have worked successfully together to further refine the methodology of anticipatory approaches like Forecast-based Financing and to develop GIS solutions for the implementation of (anticipatory) humanitarian action. The course is aimed at staff of humanitarian NGOs with experience on (anticipatory) humanitarian action as well as participants of the previous trainings on anticipatory action at the academy for humanitarian action (aha). The course can be credited for a Certificate of Advanced Studies in the field of “Anticipatory Humanitarian Action”. For more information on the certification scheme click here.

You can find the agenda and register here from now on free of charge. Given that the number of participants is limited, we kindly ask you to provide a short motivation statement upon registering and will inform you about final admission within two to three weeks after registration.
