Concepts and Mechanisms of Anticipatory Humanitarian Action

Institute for International Law of Peace and Armed Conflict

Anticipatory action is increasingly recognized as a key solution to reduce the impacts of climate change and extreme weather events; it helps people and organizations to build resilience to future shocks by better understanding risks and transforming this risk information into concrete action before a disaster strikes. Ideally, this can mitigate the humanitarian consequences of disasters and improve the response time and efficiency of humanitarian action.

As an introduction to this approach, the Institute for International Law of Peace and Armed Conflict (IFHV) of the Ruhr-University Bochum kindly invites you to the course “Concepts and Mechanisms of Anticipatory Humanitarian Action” on 6, 7 and 8 November 2023 from 9:00 am to 5:00 pm in Bochum.

Contents

In this course, you will get an overview of how the mechanisms of anticipatory humanitarian action work and discuss possibilities and limitations of the approach in your respective work context. You will learn about existing examples from NGOs as well as the Red Cross Red Crescent movement and become familiar with the basics of setting thresholds ("trigger levels") to trigger anticipatory humanitarian action, developing early actions, and exploring funding opportunities.

Facilitators

The workshop will be led by facilitators from the German Red Cross, the Red Cross Red Crescent Climate Centre and Welthungerhilfe who combine various backgrounds of expertise and experience in AHA.

Registration

The course language will be English. You can find the agenda and register free of charge via this course page. To enable interactive sessions, the number of participants is limited. Participants will receive feedback on their admission to the course one to two weeks after their registration.

This seminar is offered within a joint project of the IFHV Bochum and VENRO. It is part of the academy for humanitarian action’s certification scheme and is eligible for one of the Certificates of Advanced Studies, either in “Foundations of Humanitarian Action” or “Anticipatory Humanitarian Action”. It is financially supported by the German Federal Foreign Office.
