E-LEARNING VIDEO
Conflict sensitivity is an integral part of partnership-based development cooperation, which takes place in complex social, cultural and economic contexts. As early as the conceptualisation phase, attention should be paid to how unintended or even conflict-aggravating effects of the planned activities can be avoided. This introductory video is intended to shed light on the implementation of the Do-No-Harm approach in development and humanitarian project work.
Assignments
The following assignments will help you to implement the learning from the video:
Assignment 1: Application to own project or programme
- Identify the Context of Conflict you are working in (geographic location, groups, etc.)
- Analyse the Connectors and Dividers in your context.
- Add the details of your project.
Assignment 2: Connectors and Dividers
Depending on whether you are at planning or implementing stage, analyse the impact of your project details on the Connectors and Dividers. Mark those details that will/are likely to strengthen/or have already strengthened Dividers or weaken Connectors in red, those that will/are likely to strengthen/or have already strengthened Connectors and weaken Dividers in green.
Assignment 3: Implicit Ethical Messages
Identify (possible) negative Implicit Ethical Messages you might be sending through your actions, and where you could send positive messages, taking into consideration RAFT.
Assignment 4: Options and Re-Design
- Where you have identified negative Ressource Transfers (RTs) of the project, please re-design the project to ensure positive RTs (and Implicit Ethical Messsages) that will not strengthen Dividers and weaken Connectors, taking into consideration RAFT.
- Identify additional project/ programme options to directly strengthen Connectors and weaken Dividers
Assignment 5: Test the Options
Check if any of the options you identified will weaken Connectors or strengthen Dividers. If yes, re-design again until an option is found that will (most likely) not strengthen Dividers or weaken Connectors.
Assignment 6: Reflection
- Thinking of your organisation, what procedures and policies for Conflict Sensitivity are already in place and what else can be done to take DNH on board?
- Develop ideas for how you can mainstream Conflict Sensitivity in your organisations. What needs to change? Who needs to be involved?
